How to Build a Trading Plan and Move From Demo to Live

By IDL Capital · · 7 min read

Most traders open a live account long before they are ready, and the first losses teach expensive lessons. A written trading plan and a proper demo period remove much of that cost. This guide gives you a simple plan template and a clear checklist for moving to real money.

Why write it down

Decisions made in the moment, while price is moving and money is on the line, are rarely good ones. A plan written in advance makes the decisions for you. Your only job during the session is to follow it. If you cannot explain your strategy in writing, you do not yet have one.

Trading plan template

1. Markets and sessions

Which instruments will you trade, and when? Example: "XAUUSD only, 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 CET. No new trades 15 minutes before high-impact USD news." See the best time to trade gold.

2. Setup rules

What exactly must be true before you enter? Example: "Price at a 1-hour support or resistance zone, in the direction of the 4-hour market structure, with a confirming candlestick pattern on the 15-minute chart."

3. Entry, stop and target

Where does each go? Example: "Entry on candle close. Stop beyond the pattern with a 0.50 buffer. Target at the next opposing level, minimum 1:1.5 risk-to-reward." See setting stop loss and take profit.

4. Risk rules

  • Risk per trade: 1% of the account.
  • Maximum open risk at once: 2%.
  • Daily loss limit: 2% or two losing trades. Then stop.
  • Weekly loss limit: 5%. Then stop and review.

5. Trade management

Example: "Close half at TP1, move stop to breakeven, let the rest run to TP2. Never widen a stop." See moving to breakeven.

6. Review

Example: "Log every trade in a journal. Review all trades every Sunday."

Using the demo account properly

A demo account is only useful if you treat it like real money:

  • Set the demo balance to the amount you actually plan to deposit, not $100,000.
  • Use exactly the same risk rules and lot sizes you will use live.
  • Journal every trade, including the ones you did not follow your rules on.

When are you ready for live?

A reasonable checklist before depositing real money:

  • At least 50 demo trades taken under your written plan.
  • You followed the plan on the large majority of them, and you can show it in your journal.
  • Your results in R are positive or close to breakeven over that sample, not driven by one or two lucky trades.
  • You have had at least one losing streak and stuck to your daily loss limit.

Going live: start small

Real money feels different. Fear and greed are much stronger, even with small amounts. Start with a deposit you could lose completely without it affecting your life, and risk 0.5% per trade for the first month. Increase only after your live results look like your demo results.

Use a broker regulated by a recognised authority, and never send money to individuals offering to trade for you. See how to spot forex signal scams.

Key takeaways

  • Write the plan before you trade: markets, setups, levels, risk, management and review.
  • Treat demo like real money, with your real balance and real rules.
  • Go live only after 50+ disciplined trades, and start with smaller risk.
